A Girl In Love Photography - Melissa Squires

In my previous blog post I mentioned how amazing the wedding industry is in Ann Arbor, and how lucky we are to be surrounded by such talent.  One of my new found friends and favorites (although it feels like she has been a friend forever) is Melissa Squires of A Girl in Love Photography.  Melissa is not only an amazing artist, but she is so down-to-earth, real, and I just love, love, love her to pieces!  It is so important in the wedding industry to continue to be inspired and keep the passion, and Melissa is one of those people who continuously inspires me and keeps me passionate about designing, planning and coordinating weddings!  We have our first (hopefully of many) weddings together in May of 2012 and I can't wait!  Instead of her answering the typical questions you see in many blog posts, I asked Melissa to send me a few of her favorite images and explain what went on behind the camera and why they are her favorites...I think it says a lot about an artist and photographer when you know what they were thinking as they snapped a shot.  Take a look - I know you will fall in <3 like I have :)

Sara and Dan - this was at the Detroit Yacht club and we wanted to do a few night images (I try to do one with the cool dramatic light each wedding if possible) and I kept wanting to use the display they have in the middle of the lobby even though I thought it was a bit crazy...so Sara and Dan just kinda hung out on the other side and we lit it from behind.. I told them to just enjoy themselves...they were kissing and it came out magical!

Lexi and Brendan - the wedding ceremony was over, we had done portraits and they were ready to just take a few moments alone before the reception...I was peeking in and saw them by the window and they were there together talking and enjoying each other, maybe talking about the day so far and I thought, this is what getting married is about, I love that they didn't even realize I took the photo.

Jenay and Michael... I think that we all want to be beautiful and glamorous.  I think it's most important to photograph women as their own beautiful selves and not try to make them into someone else's image...I love that when I asked if she minded getting down in the grass in her dress she cried "of course not" and she just turned on her amazing smile.  I wanted to capture her and her natural beauty and I think we did just that :)

Rhona and Justin were married downtown Detroit, this picture was taken while we were getting ready. It's my favorite formal shot ever because, well, look at it, how awesome the family is!  I love that the dad's getting the little one ready and I love that while Justin is talking to one of his groomsmen Rhona is looking right at the camera, still, calm, peaceful, totally in the moment and enjoying the fact that she was just married to the one she loves more than anything. My second shooter and also amazing husband shot this, I love that while I'm doing something he can be capturing something and go totally unnoticed because everyone is focused on what I'm doing!

Sharon and Gerald - this image was in the most recent Brides Michigan magazine and I love that they ran it big! I think that if there is dancing at the reception then I want to get images that show the energy and the party and this image is one of those. I love that she is just letting loose and enjoying herself and the music and I love that I caught it.

Thank you Melissa for sharing your thoughts so openly and candidly with us!  Melissa's wedding packages start at $3,200 for six hours of coverage and includes an engagement session, wedding dvd with high resolution negatives and copywright, a portrait booth at reception, a second shooter, and same day 4 image film folio.

You can visit Melissa's blog here - trust me, it is addicting!

The Royal Park Hotel - Rochester, Michigan

I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon in Rochester visiting a couple amazing wedding vendors - among them, the Royal Park Hotel.

I stopped in to the Royal Park Hotel and met with Kristen Burnett, a wedding/social catering manager at the hotel.  She was so friendly and so fabulous!  Thanks Kristen :)

The uniqueness of the Royal Park Hotel lies in two things:

1.  The location & abundance of activities they offer.  The Royal Park Hotel is located one block from downtown Rochester.  You could walk, rent a bike, or use their free shuttle (within a 5 mile radius).  They also have equipment for fly fishing on the river that runs right outside the hotel, bacci ball courts, and premiere golf courses located within a couple of miles.  There are so many activities to keep your guests entertained all weekend long.

2.  Linens.  Most hotels offer the standard white linen and napkin as part of their wedding package, and charge extra for other colors or styles.  The Royal Park Hotel offers an ivory damask linen with all it's wedding packages and it is BEAUTIFUL!  It is definitely a very unique touch.

Did I mention the amazing Murano chandelier that radiates supreme beauty?  It's a must see!

The Royal Park Hotel has two immaculate areas for a wedding ceremony and reception.  The conservatory (pictured below) is ideal for a ceremony.  It is a nice air conditioned room in the summer  provides a beautiful indoor space for you Michigan winter brides.  The ballrooms are just as grand, with lots of room for guests, a dance floor, and a DJ and/or a band.

Wedding Videography - Jamie Honce Productions

I've had the pleasure of getting to know Jamie Honce over the past several weeks.  He is one of those people that make working in the wedding industry so much fun!  He is amazingly talented and I want to get married all over again just so he can film it.

I woke up this morning to an email from Jamie. He had read my blog post from yesterday and had actually used the song "Something Beautiful" by Need to Breath for a film trailer! I have watched it about a half dozen times this morning - I am in love! See for yourself:

Jackie and Joe's Trailer from Jamie Honce on Vimeo.

Jamie wasn't always a film maker...in fact his entry into the "sales" world was through a painting he sold in college.  You know what he bought with the money...a keg of beer!  Haha...meanwhile he took a job in the corporate world.  His entry back to the world of art, as a film maker, had much to do with the feelings that came from selling a product that held a value to someone.  Jamie worked hard to be able to film his friends wedding, and the business took off from there.  Jamie's genuine passion for what he does and his enthusiasm makes him one of a kind!

What is the investment for Jamie's services? Wedding packages start at $2,900. You may contact Jamie:

Emplume - "Moderne Couture Bouquets"

A few weeks ago I saw a blog post by photographer Nicole Ladonne  followed by an amazing video by filmmaker Jamie Honce showcasing pictures and a video of these amazing bouquets that are not made out of flowers, but out of FEATHERS!  They were amazing and I knew I had to hear more about these ladies (Shannon & Carrie) and their business...

A blogger recently wrote about Emplume... “On your wedding day, vow to have and to hold something special – in addition to your new husband...” and of course we completely agree!

1. What inspired you to start this business?

We were trying to find a fashion forward and unique alternative to fresh flowers for Carries wedding in 2004.
She had a limited budget and we could not bear the thought of spending money on florals just to throw them away at the end of the night!

2. How long have you been in business and where are you located?

We officially started Emplume just 6 months after Carrie's wedding. We have a design studio in Milford, MI that is by appointment only.

3. Are there different sizes of bouquets and different materials and colors I can choose from?

Currently - every Emplume bouquet is designed for each individual bride to her specifications as far as color, size, shape, style and elements inlcuded. We are soon going to be launching our 2011 collection, which will include approximately 10 bouquets that a bride can select from. They will be available in multiple colors, with choices in crystals, jewels, and ribbon handle colors. We will also continue to do completely custom bouquets as well.

4. What is your pricing?

The average bridal bouquet has a base price of $275 and any jewels, pearls, crystals, feather flowers and gorgeous upgrades are priced ala carte.  This is a nice thing for our brides, as it lets them be more in control of the overall cost of the finished bouquet.

Maid bouquets have a base price of $130 and the same ala carte prices applies. Grooms bouts are $45, mens bouts are $25 and corsages range from $30-$150 depending on the style.

5. How far in advance do I need to place my order?

We prefer 3-6 months to have our brides go thru our design process, but more time is always better! We want to have plenty of time to make sure the bouquet or collection is perfect! We require a $100 mock-up fee which allows us to put together a mock-up of the bouquet based on our conversations and the bride's preferences, which we email digital photos to the bride for approval. Our mock-up calendar typically runs 6 weeks. Our process is very collaborative, with lots of input coming from the brides... so it takes a bit of time, but is of course completely worth it in the end!

6. Will my items last forever? Is there any upkeep needed after my wedding?

Bouquets will last forever if they are taken care of properly! Carrie's original bouquet is still on display on her mantle and in perfect condition, and it has been shipped all around the counrty as a sample! Most bouquets will only need a light dusting every few months.

7. How do you take your coffee?

Starbucks of course! Carrie has a vente iced vanilla latte and I have a skinny triple grande iced latte with 2 equals.:)

Boudoir Photography

We have been blessed to get to know photographer Emily Tishhouse, owner of Emily Kay Photography, over the past couple months.  She is an outgoing, hard working, driven lady, and one of the many services she offers is boudoir photography.  What a great idea for a girls night out or a bachelorette party!!!  After several conversations and a tour of her studio, I was interested and had some questions.  Emily shares her answers here, on our blog:

What is boudoir photography?

Boudoir photography can be interpreted in many different ways. For some, it is fun and flirty, and for others it is moody and sensual. It can be high fashion or old-fashioned pin-up. A lot of people think you have to get half naked and wear lingerie for boudoir photos, but that isn’t necessarily the case. You can wear a sassy dress with your favorite heels, or opt for cute pin-up photos in your hubby’s dress shirt and tie. It really depends on your personality and what kind of look you are going for. One thing that is uniform is the way it makes a woman feel empowered and beautiful no matter their shape or size! My goal is for you to leave feeling gorgeous and confident about your body and yourself as a person!

How did you get started doing boudoir photography?

Last year I got an email from a woman who was looking for boudoir photos as a gift for her husband-to-be, and that got me wondering how many other women in my state were looking for the same kind of thing. I did some research and found that the demand was high, and there were very few studios in the area that were specializing in boudoir photography. I did a few shoots with my girlfriends and realized that boudoir was something I definitely wanted to pursue! I love helping women feel gorgeous and comfortable with their bodies!

Where do the girls get their pictures taken? Do they need to bring their own lingerie or clothing items?

Boudoir Chic shoots generally take place in my home studio where I have multiple sets designed specifically for boudoir, but I do give my clients the option of shooting in a hotel of their choice. The hotel room is not included in the cost of a session, but it can be a fun mini romantic getaway if you leave a note for your significant other to meet you at the hotel after your shoot.

I have a wardrobe with a selection of lingerie items and a collection of shoes size 6-10 for my clients to use if they wish. That being said, I do encourage my clients to bring their own items that they feel confident in so that they are guaranteed to have something that fits them very well for the shoot! Most of my clients bring 3-4 of their own outfits; that way I can help them decide which outfits they will wear with each set when they arrive.

How many people do you need to have boudoir party? Is there a maximum number of people?

The minimum number of women for a boudoir party is four and the maximum is nine. If a client organizes a party with four friends she will get her session for free, and if she organizes a party with eight friends she will also get her boudoir album for free. Boudoir parties are great for birthday parties and bachelorette parties!

How much does it cost?

My private boudoir collections range from $400 to $2,000, and each collection includes an album uniquely designed for each client. Our packages also include snacks and beverages before the shoot and a same day proofing session. Both of our high-end sessions include hair and make-up at Salon Vox in Ann Arbor. Hair and make-up can be added on to any of the other sessions for an additional cost.

The cost for Boudoir parties is $150 per person, with a minimum $150 product purchase per person. Included in the cost of the session are the following: snacks, beverages, hair and make-up, and a viewing party 2-4 weeks afterward.

How long will it be until I get my pictures back?

If you book an individual session you will see your proof images on the day of your shoot, and your fully edited images (airbrushed and ready to print) will be available for viewing two weeks later. If you have a party your proof images will be available 2-4 weeks after your session and we will schedule a date for you and your girlfriends to come in together for a viewing party.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Session must be scheduled at least one month in advance. I highly recommend scheduling a consultation with me before you book, so that we can chat about your ideas and goals for the shoot and get to know one another! If you need the images for a special event, I recommend booking your session for no later than a month before the date you need the images by (it takes about a month to edit images, design the album, and have your order printed).

Will my pictures be put on a public website for everyone to see?

All of my clients sign a model release form granting me copyright and the ability to use the images for promotional purposes. HOWEVER, I never use any images without your expressed permission! All of the images on my website are of women who have granted me permission to use the specific images for promotional use. If a client decides that they do not want any of their images on the website/used for promotional purposes, then I do not use them.

How do you take your coffee?

In the summer I like my coffee iced, with cream and a bit of raw sugar. In the winter I usually opt for hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows.

The Venue Search...Part II

I am thrilled to follow up Wednesday's post with the news that Megan has chosen her reception venue!  Out of all the possibilites (which are quite numerous), she has chosen the Gandy Dancer, Ann Arbor's first class dining establishment, as the venue for her wedding reception!

Megan and I met with Kristina, the events coordinator, a couple weeks ago and she was great!  The Gandy Dancer is a really affordable venue in Ann Arbor.  Wedding receptions typically take place outside in their courtyard, which is tented.  They provide tables, chairs, white linens (including napkins), and all dinnerware and glassware.  You can fit up to 120 people comfortably by seating them at round tables of 8.  Your primary costs when you choose the Gandy Dancer are:  food & beverage, alcohol, tax, service charge, and dance floor.

They charge 20% service charge and standard 6% Michigan sales tax.  Their most inexpensive dinner offering is $39.95 and includes a soup OR salad, choice of one of four entrees including chicken, shrimp, fish, or steak, and creme brulee for dessert.  Each entree is served with a vegetable and a starch, and water, iced tea and soft drinks are included as part of the meal charge.  If you do not want the dessert included with the package, and would like to bring in your own dessert, they will take $3 off the price - so this particular meal would cost $36.95 (plus tax & service charge).  They do have pricier options that are more inclusive - I encourage you to check these out!

The dance floor costs $250 and you can bring in whichever DJ you prefer.  There is no charge for having a private bar, you just have to pay for the alcohol (which you can set a ceiling on).  The reception area comes with uplighting, including twinkle lights strung around the beams, and they also offer round paper lanterns that hang from the ceiling if it suits your decor style (free of charge).

Kristina at the Gandy Dancer takes care of the set-up, you just need to drop your items off to her.  They are very flexible, and very willing to work with each individual situation.  They require a $250 deposit on a credit card to hold the date.  You have until 90 days prior to the event to cancel, and you can rebook for any date within the year to avoid losing your $250.  If you cancel within the 90 day window of your event you lose your $250 deposit.

You may email Kristina at gandbq@ldry.com to receive availability and specific pricing information.

The Venue Search...Part I

One of my dear, dear friends and amazing wedding and life photographer Whitney Keeler emailed me one night to tell me that one of her brides needed help...and quickly.  That's what I'm here for!  Megan called me a couple hours later and and it was clear that her number one need, and first priority was to find a ceremony & reception venue for her May 2011 wedding.  Megan was pretty flexible as to whether she would get married on-site somewhere, outside in a park, or in a church...she just knew she was on a pretty tight budget and the two dates she had in mind were not negotiable.  And so the search began...

- A lot of venues have a minimum on food & beverage (mainly on a Friday & Saturday evening) BEFORE service charge and tax.  Make sure you ask your venue if this is the case.

- There may be a facility charge or room rental fee.  Make sure you check to see if that's included in the menu pricing or if it's a separate charge.  Also ask about whether tables (verify what shape and size), linens (verify what colors), and chairs are included.

- It's always a GREAT idea if you can go in person so see the space.  This gives you a feel for the layout, size, decor, and general feel of the venue and the space.  If you are out of town or cannot go, send someone you trust in your place and have them take pictures to send to you.

- A lot of wedding packages come with a "dessert" item.  Most venues will work with you to create a package that better suits your needs and will even adjust prices accordingly.  However, inquire if there's a cake cutting charge if you bring in your own wedding cake.

- If it's a place that typically requires a membership (i.e. Ann Arbor City Club), you will probably have to buy a guest membership to use their facility or they may charge you a higher rental rate for being a non-member.

The venues that Megan and I discussed included Weber's, Detroit Yacht Club, The Inn at St. John, Concordia University, and the Gandy Dancer.  Each venue has it's pro's & con's, it comes down to what is the best fit for the couple getting married.  Megan really wants an "Ann Arbor" wedding so we will do our best to give that to her....

We are close to choosing a venue...stay tuned!!!!

Real Wedding 2010 ~ Vanessa & Derek

Vanessa & Derek's wedding was full of personal touches - from the pictures hanging in the tent for all the guests to admire (and laugh at), to the kids tables with butcher paper, crayons, and markers, every detail was thought of and provided by Vanessa; including the invitations, the programs, the signage for the welcome table, food, the runners for the tables in the lounge (pictured below).  She is AMAZING!

Their wedding and reception venue was the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  The wedding took place outside in the Beer Garden and the latter part of the reception took place inside in the lounge.

When we met a few days before the wedding we were all a little nervous that it could rain (50% chance).  However, the day of the wedding it was a beautiful, beautiful day, clearly meant just for Vanessa & Derek.

CONGRATULATIONS Vanessa & Derek!  Thank you for letting us assist in your special day!

Preferred Vendors - what does that mean?

"Preferred Vendor."  What does that mean?

photo courtesy of Pink Sky Photography

In the wedding industry you will hear this term a lot!  It is in our contract, it is in our vocabulary, and it is in the literature you will receive from many, many venues.

The term has a bit of a bad reputation.  I can't tell you how many times I have been asked "do you receive a kickback from vendors who you refer clients to?"  The answer for us is a resounding NO!!!!!

We refer clients to specific vendors based on our established relationship, knowledge of their work, professionalism, honesty, price, and of course being a good fit for the client.  The vendors who are willing to give us a "cut" are not the ones we want to work with - we want the vendors willing to pass that discount on to our clients.  For example, a rental company (Your Event Party Rental in Plymouth, Michigan) that we work very closely with waves the damage waiver for our clients (usually 6% of the total bill), they are on time, professional, have great equipment, and are nice people...a winning combination.

photo courtesy of Crossing River Weddings

My dear colleague and friend, Lindsey Nartker, said it best when she started doing blog posts once a week on a new vendor.  Why would she share her wedding planning secrets?  Why would she want the world to know what vendors to use?  Lindsey said it best when she blogged:

"Some people are probably wondering why I’d share all my favorite vendors when typically that is what my clients hire me to do… well, there is enough to go around for everyone! If I kept all these people my little secret than I’m definitely doing them injustice. They all deserve to be highlighted and recognized for their super cool personalities and stellar work. (Plus, as a wedding coordinator, recommending vendors is only a small part of what we do. Clients hire us to know the vendors and know which ones are a great fit for their wedding. We also know how their services are priced and if they’re available for your date. Not every photographer will work for every bride – it’s our job to make the process of selecting the right vendor super duper easy!)

Choosing a vendor is more than just who's available on your day...it's finding a good fit, somebody who is on your same page, who you trust, who is timely, and who is within your budget.

The vendors highlighted in this blog post are without a doubt some of our preferred vendors...Be sure to check them out!!!

A September Bride

One of our September brides is having the wedding of a lifetime! We had our initial meeting with the florist last week and I can hardly wait to share some ideas! Take a look:

green dendrobium orchid

lisanthium

dendrobium ordchid

mini green hydrangea
The dark purple, aubergine if you will, really makes the green pop! The bride will be carrying a bouquet more purple than green, while her maids bouquets will be a good combination of both colors. I can hardly wait to see the mock ups!!!

Alanna Rochelle Designs (Jewelry!)

This girl is amazingly talented!  I have a few pieces of jewelry from her and I just ordered one more!  Here is a peek at what I'm getting...

I own a few necklaces of hers which I can pair with a super casual outfit (jeans and t-shirt) or I can dress up with when meeting clients.  I recently asked her to make me a bracelet with contrasting colors and the picture above is what she came up with.  At first I was uncertain and threw a few more ideas her way.  However, when she emailed the pics of variations on the bracelet back to me, I realized that she was right all along.  Alanna knows what she's doing, I should never have second guess her in the first place.

Second guessing Alanna put me in the position of one of my clients second guessing me.  It was pretty interesting to feel like I can start to understand their thought process and why they might have different thoughts.  In the end, the professional is usually right :)

Alanna's jewelry is great as a birthday gift, for your bridal party, mother, mother-in-law, or for the bride herself.  She is having a great sale right now so visit her store at:

She also makes custom jewelry so don't be afraid to ask for something specific!!!
